In 1972, concerned to protect and preserve culturally valuable historical sites and buildings, and irreplaceable natural environments, recognizing them as common assets of mankind that should kept for future generations, the UNESCO General Assembly adopted the “Convention Concerning the Protection of the World's Cultural and Natural Heritage.” Under this convention, places meeting certain criteria, and classified as cultural heritage or natural heritage or mixed heritage, are inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” were inscribed as World Cultural Heritage on July 7, 2004.
What kind of cultural heritage is Kumano Kodo?
The “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” is the first example of “cultural landscapes” in Japan being recognized as World Cultural Heritage.
Cultural landscapes are “landscapes formed through the ages by nature and by human action.” Here, besides mountains and rivers which have been worshiped for a long time as places where gods dwell, the cultural landscapes involve forests, tanada rice terraces, settlements and other places close to the lives of people. Judged to have cultural landscapes that have persisted in good condition for more than 1,200 years, the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” were inscribed as World Heritage.
Where are they?
Kumano Kodo Iseji is a pilgrimage road that connects the Kumano Hayatama Taisha from Ise Shrine (Naiku). It has led to Kumano City, Mie Prefecture from Ise City.
How do we visit there?

When is the best season to visit?
There is a beautiful scenery in every season. Climatically, spring to autumn is recommended. After the rain of the day or the next day wet Stone pavement is slippery and dangerous, so a sunny day is good for people without confidence in the legs.
What kind of clothes should we wear there?
Depending on the location and season to go, basically loose-fitting clothes are good. There are the wears using the material superior in quick-drying, we recommend them in order to be active more comfortably. We cannot recommend the thing disturbing movement in the heaviness such as jeans. To protect the body from direct sunlight and a pest (bee, horsefly, etc.), it is recommended not to expose your skins if possible. deep shoes that cover the ankle, rain gear, drink, Etc.
There is no trash box on the mountain pass basically. Please take the garbage home(or place to stay) without throwing it away. In addition, please certainly stop the littering of the cigarette.
How long does a cell-phone go in the mountain?
There are some areas where a cell-phone doesn't work. (By the mobile model, radio waves and the surrounding circumstances calling area will differ.) Not mobile does not work the whole mountain pass, Please try again at good prospect or after a little moving.
Can we take our children?
It's okay as long as a process can afford. When with children please confirm that the guardians can take enough care of them.
